Many linguists associate language with the function for which it was created, namely communication and transmission. Language has no meaning if its speakers cannot use it to communicate. This linguistic function manifests across the four levels of language: phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Some scholars add another level, the pragmatic level, as in Functional Grammar Theory. Therefore, this article seeks to present the linguistic concepts found in this theory and to compare them with what our scholars established in the Arabic linguistic and grammatical heritage.
