Abstract

Abstract Written texts are characterized by its being open to more than one reading because they are not performed in a specific way, and there- fore, the reader attempts, by his/her reading, to find out the meaning of such texts. However, some phonetic features, that may co-occur with the articulation, multiply the way of performing the texts, or at least some parts of them, which results in a variety of meanings. The Hadith interpreters have benefited from these features in finding out the meaning or in providing different readings of the same text. This study attempts to observe the Hadiths, in which such features have been applied, so as to find out how far they have contributed to finding out the meaning of the Hadiths or providing different readings of the same Hadith. It also presents a parallel analysis of some Hadiths that have several meanings to provide a complete theoretical frame- work of the role of the phonetic features in the polysemy of texts. The study depends on three resources:” Qa:ridQatu alPaèwaDij biSarèi sQaèièi attirmiDij”, ”sQaèièu muslimin biSarèi annawawij” and ”fatèu alba:rij biSarèi sQaèièi albuxa:rij”. Both the descriptive and analytical approaches are applied in this study. That is, from a descriptive per- spective, I observe polysemous texts in the Hadiths and discuss the views of the Hadith interpreters, and from an analytical perspective, I present a parallel analysis for the polysemous Hadiths in the light of their internal structure and external context. For the latter purpose, I benefit from the theory of discourse analysis
