Abstract

This article aims to highlight the role of contextual meaning in the grammatical codification of sentence structures, as well as in understanding their linguistic formation, syntactic features, and interpretative functions. It does so by enabling both textual and situational dimensions to contribute to the treatment of grammatical issues related to the definition of grammatical concepts in terms of description, justification, and theoretical grounding.

It shows that grammarians did not neglect the internal and external textual context in constructing their terminological discourse. Rather, they relied on linguistic foundations, systemic rules, and contextual data that governed the formation of their grammatical system—whether in naming, conceptualization, or definition.

Accordingly, the study raises the following questions: What is the function of contextual meaning in the study of grammatical phenomena and the establishment of their rules? And how did grammarians deal with the various contexts in which grammatical terms appear in order to define their conceptual features, determine their terminological meanings, and codify their rules?
