Repetition and its artistic aesthetics in poetic text: Abu al-Ala al-Ma’arri as a model.

Abstract

The subject of this study is repetition and its artistic aesthetics in poetic texts, with al-Ma’arri as a model. It is presented in an introduction, four sections, and a conclusion.

In the introduction, I discussed my continuous connection with the literature of Abu al-Ala al-Ma’arri in general, and with his poetry in particular—his poems and fragments in his two collections, Saqt al-Zand and Luzumiyyat. I also addressed what I have come to know about him as a person, his intellectual world, philosophy, ideas, and principles through his literary works, which reflect all of these aspects. It became clear to me that he had a deep mastery of the Arabic language, both in vocabulary and meaning.

Then I moved on to the main topic of the study, examining al-Ma’arri’s use of repetition of letters, particles, and words. I provided examples and textual evidence from his poetry for each type, analyzed these examples, and explained the reasons for the use of repetition. It became evident that his repetition was deliberate and intentional, aimed at clarifying, emphasizing, and firmly establishing his ideas and principles in the minds of readers.

As for the conclusion, I presented the most important findings reached through this study.
