Choice and deviation between rhetoric and stylistic
Keywords:
Rhetoric, Choice, DeviationAbstract
Comparison is a way of research that leads to knowledge. By establishing it between
ancient rhetoric and modern stylistics, we hope to clarify the cognitive links between the two
disciplines and the attraction of concepts. We have compared two concepts, namely, choice and
deviation in ancient (Arabic and Western) rhetoric and modern stylistics. The researchers’
definitions were collected in a chronological order respectively as to make it easy for the reader
to learn about the two concepts evolution. We deeply believe that comparing the concept choice
with the concept deviation in rhetoric and stylistics from the point of view that both concepts
determine the style, is enough to show clearly the relation between ancient rhetoric and modern
stylistics.Perhaps, the most important conclusion of this paper is that studies have been carried
out attempting to make of stylistics a discipline independent from rhetoric.
