The Primary Caregiver Facing Alzheimer's Disease: Between Burden and Family Resilience- A Case Study"

Abstract

This descriptive and qualitative study aims to deeply analyze the burden experienced by primary caregivers, as well as the resilience mechanisms deployed by Algerian families when facing the complex challenges engendered by Alzheimer's disease. This investigation is situated within a socio-demographic context marked by an increasing aging population and the limited availability of formal support structures. The methodological approach relied on a single, in-depth case study, that of Khadidja, a 36-year-old primary caregiver. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview, the Zarit Burden Interview scale, and the Family Coping Strategies Questionnaire (F-COPES). The results, illustrated by Khadidja's case, indicate a significant burden affecting her daily life and health, even though she perceives it as mild to moderate (score of 39/88). Concurrently, the analysis revealed a remarkable resilience in the caregiver, attributed to individual predispositions, the mobilization of the family system, and the seeking of spiritual support.

This scientific research enhances the understanding of family dynamics in the Algerian environment and underscores the importance of recognizing resilience resources within the context of Alzheimer's disease care.
