Self-affirmation skills for psychological counseling students at A’Sharqiyah University in the light of some variables

Abstract

The research aims to measure the level of self-affirmation skills among students majoring in psychological counseling at A’ Sharqiyah University in the Sultanate of Oman in the light of the following variables: academic year, cumulative average, academic level. The researchers followed the descriptive approach, and to answer the research questions, Ratus' self-affirmation skills scale was applied on a sample of (247) students specializing in psychological counseling at A’ Sharqiyah University, which were chosen randomly. The results of the research concluded that the self-affirmation skills of students specializing in psychological counseling were " Moderately low ", and there were no statistically significant differences for the variable (academic year) and the variable (academic level), while there are statistically significant differences for the variable (cumulative average) in favor of students with averages (3.1-4.0).

Based on the findings, the study recommended:

- Include self-assertion skills more within the theoretical and practical courses in the specialization of psychological counseling to enhance affirmative behavior among students.

- Conducting group counseling sessions for students and focusing on the skills of (arguing about prices - verbal fluency - self-expression - emphasis in commercial transactions) to develop their skills with students.

- Conducting other research on life, personal, social and psychological skills with psychological counseling students to ensure that they are well qualified to practice the psychological counseling profession.

- Conducting research to measure self-assertion skills with categories from other disciplines at the undergraduate level.
