Attitudes of students of Tiaret University towards majoring in psychology - a field study for students majoring in psychology at University of Tiaret

Abstract

The current study aimed to identify students’ attitudes toward the psychology major - a field study at the University of Tiaret, as well as individual differences in (gender, age, housing, and economic status) and to identify the nature of individuals’ attitudes toward different topics or situations, and this is the subject of the study. Currently, the issue of the trend towards psychology has not received much attention from researchers, especially in Algeria. This is what the researcher sensed during the process of collecting sources and information related to this topic, as the problem of the study lies in the feeling of university students that the profession of psychology is an inappropriate profession, and the belief is still prevalent that psychologists are people who are difficult to deal with as individuals, so the aim of the current research is to reveal Attitudes of Tiaret University students towards majoring in psychology. To achieve the objectives of the study, we followed the descriptive, recorded approach, using the attitude towards psychology scale as a tool for collecting data, prepared by the researcher according to the five-point Likert scale, and the number of statements reached 40 statements. After confirming the psychometric properties of the tool and the extent of its validity and reliability, the study was conducted on a sample of 124 male and female students, and we concluded that the students’ attitudes toward the psychology major were negative. There are also no individual differences in the level of students’ attitudes toward the psychology major according to the variables of gender, age, and residence, while there are individual differences in the level of students’ attitudes toward the psychology major according to the economic status variable.
