Abstract

Through this research paper, we aim to access the essence of Algerian culture during the Ottoman era and the French occupation era through the content analysis approach and the documentary trend in it, using personal analysis that focused on tracing the components of the basic personality of popular poets during the Ottoman era and the French occupation era. Counting the veteran poets who lived through the two mentioned periods, and in this regard, we collected twenty-three popular poets, from whom we obtained forty-one popular poems. This is with the aim of reaching national specificities that require research on the common elements of the poets’ personalities, given that the common aspect is cultural while the differences remain individual and psychological, and this is without neglecting the historical research related to the Ottoman periods and the era of the French occupation, which created a major rift in Algerian society. At all levels, from political to social to economic to cultural, and the attempts at cultural distortion of the colonial administration are not hidden from those interested in the two historical periods that we chose in this study. In our personality analysis, we relied on a priori coding analysis based on the four categories that make up the basic personality, which are: thinking techniques, security patterns, superego, and religious behaviors. The results of the study showed profound transformations at the level of thinking techniques and perception of life, and major differences at the level of intellectual reference and symbolic representations, according to Gilbert Durand’s expression, which proves that the civilizational clash that occurred with the colonial campaign had clear, visible results that made the Algerian It is related to people, not ideas, and it has more than one indication of the grassroots cultural level represented by the Algerian grassroots personality.
