School violence, its factors and effects on the psychological, social and academic adjustment of students in Algerian secondary schools

Abstract

The phenomenon of school violence appears to be increasingly specific at the secondary level in terms of its seriousness and its consequences on the psychological, social and academic adjustment of students in Algerian secondary schools.

This study aims to reveal the impact of school violence on the psychological, social and academic adjustment of secondary school students. A field study in the provinces of the states (Algiers, Constantine, Adrar, and Oran).

To examine and study the variables, we relied on the descriptive, correlational, comparative approach and the application of a battery of psychological tests, such as the school adjustment test by Nahman, personality selection for the middle and high school levels by Tiegs et al., the measure of aggressive and hostile behavior among adolescents and young adults by Amal Abdel Samie Melegi Baza, in addition to the questionnaire. The sample consisted of 300 students with violent behavior and 300 normal students studying in secondary schools across the Algerian country, who were selected randomly.

The results of the study revealed that there are psychological, family, social, school and media factors that contribute to school violence. In addition, there are fundamental differences between the arithmetic averages of violence scores among violent students compared to ordinary students in secondary education, and the presence of statistically significant differences between the arithmetic averages of psychological adjustment scores among violent students compared to ordinary students in secondary education, and the presence of statistically significant differences between the arithmetic averages of scores Social adjustment among violent students compared to ordinary students.
