Employing advanced technologies to achieve the transformation towards smart libraries

Abstract

Currently, the world is witnessing rapid advancement in the field of digital technologies, and this development has led to a fundamental shift in the structure and functions of libraries. Smart libraries have become an inevitable path for the development of knowledge services. This study aims to demonstrate the methods of radical transformation towards smart libraries, which represent the advanced fifth generation of libraries. This generation utilizes the technologies of the digital revolution to transform libraries from traditional spaces for preserving and storing books into interactive knowledge environments based on creativity and innovation. These libraries rely on a smart infrastructure that integrates technology to enhance service efficiency and accurately meet the needs of beneficiaries.

 The fundamental technologies supporting this transformation include Artificial Intelligence (AI), which contributes to automating cataloging and searching, as well as providing interactive chatbots. Big Data acts as a primary feeder for these systems to analyze user behaviors and their informational needs, while the Internet of Things (IoT) connects physical devices to streamline routine operations such as automated borrowing. Additionally, Blockchain technology plays an important role in providing secure decentralized records, alongside RFID technology, which has revolutionized the inventory, tracking, and theft protection of collections. Furthermore, Augmented Reality (AR) is used to enrich the readers' experience, and robots are employed to perform complex physical tasks such as arranging shelves and welcoming visitors. Despite the emergence of inspiring global models, such as the libraries of Siberia and Oxford universities, this transformation faces significant challenges represented by cybersecurity risks, high operational costs, and a shortage of qualified and trained human competencies. The study concluded that smart transformation has become an absolute necessity to ensure continuity and competitiveness, and recommended developing comprehensive national strategies, focusing on the continuous training of librarians, and enacting legislation that protects data privacy to ensure a sustainable digital future
