Abstract

 ABSTRACT In this research, we have dealt with psychic verbs in the Arabic language in light of the cognitive semantics theory. At beginning we determined the theoretical frame that we will take as a reference, then we indicated the meaning of psychic verbs in the Arabic dictionary and we divided them into two categories: verbs of extraversion and verbs of contraction. Then we studied them according to the conceptual metaphor framework, focusing on the embodied knowledge theory, to reveal the view of embodiment of abstract linguistic structures (love/hate, anger/euphoria, sadness/happiness, arrogance/shame…) and the role of our conceptual systems, imagination and experiences in building these verbs’ meanings as well as understanding them from the hypothesis stating that psychic verbs are abstract and are embodied through metaphorical projection and that metaphor is a mechanism to understand an abstract psychological experience through another sensory experience (love is a decease, love is a light, anger is fire…)
