Abstract

In the quest for his identity, affirmed in the preamble of Confessions and from the very beginning of Reveries, Rousseau seeks to reveal to the reader his true self. This search for the self is achieved through complete withdrawal from the world. The purpose of this article, which is a critical study of Rousseau’s autobiographical works, is to show how the author conceives meditation by secularizing it and, at the same time, unintentionally initiating himself into writing. The study aims to demonstrate how he strips this practice of its religious dimension, how he secularizes it, and finally to what extent meditative practice may constitute an involuntary initiation into writing.
