Abstract

This study is embedded in the theory of social representation (social psychology). Its purpose was to explore the social representations made by students in the first year -social science about the university, in order to reveal the representational elements that can give meaning to the lack of motivation in students as well as the differences existing between these representational elements and the academic and official visions of the university. With the use of the hierarchical evocation instrument (based on the technique of free association) in a survey conducted in January 2019 among a sample of 100 students (University of Jijel), and comparing the data collected with that collected in another survey conducted by ourselves in 2011/2012 among a sample of 72 students (University of Skikda), we have demonstrated that the university is seen as a place of study, It is an institution where one obtains an essential high diploma in order to have a job and guarantee one’s future. The degree is, as expected, very important in the eyes of students, but it lacks its intellectual value. Training and scientific research are no longer a major concern for respondents, contrary to the interest accorded to them by academic and official circles.
