The olive sector in Bejaia: Inventory, constraints and prospects

Abstract

Bejaia is an olive-growing wilaya by excellence, it is the main olive-growing area in Algeria. Its mountainous character and Mediterranean climate have made it a pilot region in terms of olive production. Despite its advantages, the olive growing sector in Bejaia suffers from multiple constraints that hamper its development, modernization and rise.

In this work, we propose to analyze in depth the functioning of the olive sector in Bejaia and identify the main causes that prevent its development. Our approach is empirical, it focuses on a field survey guided by a field survey in addition to interviews with stakeholders in the olive sector.

The analysis of the data and the processing of the questionnaires have shown that the future development of the olive sector in Bejaia cannot be realized without a cooperative and mutual organization of all the stakeholders in this sector.
