The study aimed to analyze the Algerian government policies aimed at combating desertification and drought in steppe areas during the period (2008-2020). Given the strategic importance of these areas, which represent an environmental and economic strip separating the arid desert south and the agricultural north. The study adopted a descriptive and analytical approach to diagnose the manifestations of desertification and drought and their natural and human causes. It also examined and analyzed the most important government programs and policies. Similar to the High Plateaus Development Programme, the Rural Renewal Policy, and the Integrated Rural Development Neighbourhood Projects aimed at protecting the land from degradation.
The study concluded that these policies contributed to reducing some aspects of land degradation and improving the living conditions of the population. The results also showed that the success of these efforts depends on their integration with local development strategies and the involvement of local actors in implementation and follow-up.
