The role of the Rahmaniya Mokhtariya Zawiya in the popular resistance in the Ouled Jellal region

Abstract

This research paper aims to identify the effective role played by the Mokhtariya Rahmaniya Zawiya in the popular resistance in Ouled Jellal against French colonialism. This study concluded by confirming that the Sheikh of the Mokhtariya Zawiya was able, thanks to his religious status, to mobilize the people of the Ouled Jellal region and its suburbs, and urge them to jihad for the sake of God and the homeland, and this was done by enlisting the help of the followers and disciples of the Zawiya, so all the residents of the region participated in this uprising. Despite the simplicity of the weapons and the small number, the resistance of the Ouled Jellal is considered an icon of the sacrifice and struggle of the Algerian people against the French occupier, and an important station in the path of Algerian popular resistance during the nineteenth century AD.
