With the emergence of the first signs of oil in Algeria in January 1956 and the subsequent oil discoveries, France invested heavily in the Algerian Sahara to explore new oil reserves. As French and international oil companies rushed to invest in Algeria, this growing interest caught the attention of the international press, including the American newspaper The New York Times, which published numerous articles on the discovery and its impact on the political and economic situation in Algeria.
The New York Times not only focused on the details of the oil discovery and its exploitation but also on the significant repercussions of this discovery, such as the competition among international companies to obtain exploration licenses in the Algerian Sahara, along with the complexities that French policy faced in the Algerian Sahara due to the Algerian War of Independence. French activities in the Sahara became a target of the Algerian revolution.
