The emergence of Janissary conflicts in Algeria during the 16th century -A historical reading in light of mission documents (mühimme defteri)-

Abstract

This study, based on the "Mihma Daftari" documents, examines the reality of the Janissary conflicts in Algeria during the 16th century. These conflicts were not limited to competition with the corsairs for positions of power, as is commonly believed, but extended to other influential groups, including the local population. The reasons for this were threefold: First, the emergence of two competing military factions: an established faction that had acquired privileges during the initial period of Algeria's incorporation into the Ottoman Empire and feared competition from any new power; and a new faction that also aspired to the same privileges.Second, the lack of clarity regarding their powers. Finally, the period witnessed a gradual shift from a feudal military system to a tax farming system, during which the Janissaries sought to maintain their privileges and continue their position of influence within the government.
