Internet Governance and its Repercussions on States’ Sovereignty

Abstract

"Internet Governance" is a thorny and important issue at the same time, especially considering its implications for the sovereign right of states to control all aspects related to the Internet's general policies. This is evidenced by the regression of positive law (both international and national) in front of the standardization rules on which the Internet is based, and which are established by individuals and non-governmental associations under the supervision and coordination of a private company subject to California law and the authority of the American administration as well. It's an issue even if it appears at first glance a pure technology, but it hides the economic and strategic privileges that the US government seeks to protect by continuing to extend its dominance over the technical infrastructure of the Internet. Also, the widespread of the Internet across the world and turning it into a "global public resource" showed the economic, political, social and cultural stakes associated with it for all countries. This led the latter demanding that "technical Internet governance" be subject to government oversight and that it be removed from US control.
