Abstract

Relaxation is one of the most crucial factors in executing a successful smash. Synchronizing body movements contributes to its improvement. The aim of this study was to determine how and why one attacking volleyball player jumps higher than another. To this end, we selected a study sample comprising an experimental group and a reference group (Giba) of attacking volleyball players and studied their movements during the execution of the smash technique. Using computer software, we determined and calculated a number of biomechanical parameters (kinematic and dynamic) for each player. The kinematic parameters were calculated from the analysis of video sequences, and the dynamic parameters were calculated using physical equations. From the results of the reference sample, we deduced that there were three (3) discriminating criteria which explain the performance achieved by the experimental group, namely the takeoff angle, the coordination of arm and leg movements and the maximum power developed during the vertical jump.
