The Zawiya and the challenge of references in contemporary Algerian society

Abstract

This research aims to define the role of the Zawia as an educational and religious institution in preserving the unity of the Algerian society and its inherent identity. This society knew different periods which oscillated between relapses and refreshments, and still faces many challenges that threaten its unity and even its security and stability. These challenges include the cultural divisions of the society; the inflowing religious currents and doctrines characterized by intolerance, extremism and violence; and finally the cultural invasion leading to an obliteration of the nation’s cultural identity and the dismantling of the society’s culture into conflicting and mutually malevolent cultures.

To withstand these challenges, the Zawia has to preserve and maintain the unity of the society, establish bonds of harmony, as well as the embodiment of social latency between its members who are torn between westernization and authenticity. This can be achieved through: maintaining the cultural unity of society; maintaining the religious reference of society and preserving the cultural identity of society.

Résume:

Cette recherche a pour but d'identifier le rôle du zawia  en tant qu'institution éducative religieuse dans la préservation de l'unité de la société algérienne et de son identité inhérente, qui a connu différentes étapes et a fait face à de nombreux défis qui menacent son unité, sa sécurité et sa stabilité.

       Parmices défis figurent la division culturelle de la société, les courants et les doctrines religieuses et l'intolérance, l'extrémisme et la violence, et enfin l'invasion culturelle et l'oblitération de l'identité culturelle de la nation et le démantèlement des  Zawia est de préserver l'unité de la société et maintenir  les liens d'harmonie  entre ses composantes, ainsi que l'incarnation du retard social entre ses membres qui sont entre  l'occidentalisation et  l'originalité.
