Al-Muhtaj family were initially merely local rulers in the Saghanian region. However, over time, they established themselves as an influential family in the history of the Samanid state. This article examines the political and military activities of Abu Ali Chaghani, who brought the Al-Muhtaj family to the height of their political and military glory and assumed the position of commander of the Samanid armies. Despite Abu Ali's influential role in consolidating Samanid authority and expanding their influence, his disagreement with them led to his rebellion and alliance with their enemies. The study concludes that Abu Ali's rebellion played a pivotal role in weakening the power of the Samanid state and the failure of their policy of relying on local ruling families.
