The local forces and their role in Ottoman Algeria 1518-1830 - The Tribal Sheikhdom as a Model-

Abstract

       This research paper aims to shed light on the role that the tribal sheikhdom played in the rural and desert milieu, whether in its tribal sphere or in its relations with the Ottoman authority. As these sheikhs helped the Ottoman authority in Algeria to extend its influence smoothly in areas far from the center of power, This was one of the factors that made the Ottoman influence extend to the rural and desert sphere, and To ensure the loyalty of these sheikhs, the authority was approaching those in charge of it by granting them privileges, such as in heritng the sheikhly. It also granted them the powers to collect taxes, not to mention exempting them from paying them. And in many cases this approach was translated intermarriage between the two parties.
