This study tracks the developmental trajectory of historical writing on the Ancient Maghreb in Algeria from 1830 to 1990. It focuses on the shift from colonial historiography, which sought to legitimize the imperial project, to the emergence of a critical academic discourse among Algerian elites in the mid-1970s. The research outlines the institutional foundation of Ancient Maghreb studies, identifying its pioneers and defining characteristics before examining the phase of academic indigenization by local scholars. The study concludes that local research is characterized by objectivity and impartiality, emphasizing the necessity of fostering these indigenous academic contributions to ensure a balanced historical narrative.
