Abstract

The issue of Algeria's relationship with the Ottoman Empire has been frequently raised, often shrouded in ambiguity and contradiction, particularly given Algeria's unique circumstances. These included Ottoman rule, the utilization of local forces to maintain control, and Algeria's independence in political and diplomatic decision-making, currency, flag, and the signing of agreements. All these factors contribute to the complex interplay between the trajectory of Algerian-Ottoman relations, oscillating between dependency and alliance. This necessitates a historical examination of the subject, exploring the unique characteristics of Algeria, the transnational loyalties within the Caliphate, and shared interests.
