Abstract

Violence (Violencia) within Roman civilization took on numerous forms. This study sheds light on the mechanisms of the Roman legal system in its fight against crime and violence, as well as their impact on shaping the behaviors and values of Roman society, by explaining how institutionalized violence in the Roman penal code became a means of popular claims. This study aims to provide a deep understanding of violence in ancient Rome and, through the analysis of these dynamics, reveals that violence was not merely a repressive tool but also a fundamental pillar in stranghening imperial power and unifying social identity, thereby inviting a reconsideration of its role as an innovative political mechanism.
