The Berbers mawali role within Caliphate until mid-eighth century

Abstract

A great deal has been written about the Mawali (Clients), this subject in fact has been a topic of many studies, and so rather than repeat what already has been said ; we propose here to deal only with one group ; which are the Berbers mawali; in aim to highlight their role within the Caliphate from the conquest of north Africa to the mid-eighth century. This paper demonstrate that Berbers mawali had a very important role, both in the state and Arab-Muslim society, many of them were apointed army generals, administrators in sensitive positions, while others were active in literary and scientific matters.
