Some physiological measurements and their relationship to the performance of freestyle swimming (50m) in young swimmers

Abstract

This study explores the physiological correlates of performance in the 50m freestyle, addressing the gap between local and international records by investigating how functional efficiency (cardiac and respiratory) influences digital achievement. Using a descriptive correlational approach on a purposive sample of 12 junior swimmers (ages 15–17) from North Gas SC, the researcher measured resting heart rate (RHR), vital capacity (VC), and systolic blood pressure (SBP) using a spirometer, sphygmomanometer, and electronic stopwatches. Statistical analysis via SPSS (Mean Time: 26.15s, VC: 4.95L, RHR: 61.50 bpm) revealed a strong inverse correlation between vital capacity and time (r = -0.89) and a positive correlation between resting pulse and time (r = 0.81), indicating that higher lung capacity and lower heart rates are pivotal for speed Physiologically full lungs enhance buoyancy and reduce resistance, while a low pulse reflects athlete’s heart hypertrophy" and delayed fatigue. The study concludes that vital capacity is the most decisive factor for performance and recommends incorporating respiratory muscle training into coaching programs, adopting physiological benchmarks for talent selection and utilizing on-site diagnostic tools to monitor athlete adaptation.
